Year 3 2023 - 2024
Welcome to Year 3
Happy New Year! I hope you have had a great break and are looking forward to the Spring Term. We have lots of exciting challenges planned for this term and the following information outlines what your child will be learning.
Throughout this term we will be focusing on multiplication and division of 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers, money, statistics, length and fractions. We will also continue to practice our fluency of timetables through Times Tables Rock Stars so completion of TTRS homework and home practice is essential for your child’s success. Children will also have the opportunity to practice their fluency skills through core skills and tough ten.
This term in English we will be using the book “Fossil Girl” by Catherine Brighton to write a journal entry. The book tells the true story of Mary Anning’s discovery of the first complete Ichthyosaur which astonished the scientific world in the early 1800s. After the February half term, we will immerse ourselves in the award-winning picture “Big Blue Whale” by Nicola Davies. We will find out about the largest mammal on the planet which will inspire us to write a persuasive informative article about the protection of the blue whale. These will support us to build our skills in grammar, vocabulary, punctuation and composition.
Learning Adventure – Earthquakes and Volcanoes
In our Learning Adventure this term, we will learn about earthquakes and volcanoes. We will describe their key aspects. We will locate the major earthquake/volcano areas and discover why they exist. Children will build on their art skills through learning about Nick Rowland to create volcano art. In DT, we will be designing an earthquake proof shelter.
As budding scientists, we will learn about the three types of natural rocks – igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. We will learn how fossils are made. After half term, we will learn about forces and magnets. Children will learn what can happen when a force is applied to an object and identify when a force is a push or a pull. They will learn how magnets can attract and repel.
Our PE lessons are on Tuesday and Friday every week. Please can PE kits be in school and labelled with your child’s name.
Please can all children bring in a labelled water bottle for them to use throughout their school day.
Homework will be set on Ed Shed and will include spellings, maths and grammar. Homework will be set on Fridays and needs to be completed by the following Wednesday. There will also be Times Table Rock Stars homework set (TTRS). Your child will have their own individual login for both Ed Shed and TTRS. This will be found inside their planners which are to be taken home and brought into school every day
Please support your child to read their Accelerated Reader books for 20 minutes each day at home and log this in their planner. Planners will be checked regularly and house points will be awarded to children who reach their targets.
Please ensure your child’s planner is in school every day. If you wish to deliver a message to me, please use the planner as a form of communication but make sure they remember to hand it to me that morning so as to guarantee I see the message. Alternatively, you can contact the school office, either by telephone or e-mail, and they will either pass the message to me.
Thank you for all your support.
